Lavender Essential Oil for Sunburns
One of the first times lavender oil was introduced to me was in 2016. I had just moved to Hawaii and got the gnarliest sunburn on my face. We were driving around in my friends Jeep with no top- no sun protection. I unknowingly came home to maybe the 2nd worse sunburn that I have gotten in an area that could not be hidden. My new roommate’s mom handed me some lavender essential oil and told me to mix it with coconut oil to help the sunburn.
Life changing.
This not only helped to take the stinging sensation out of the burn but also helped to reduce the redness at a faster rate. My burn disappeared within a few days.
Fast forward to quarantine 2020, and it is starting to get hot here in the high desert. Not only is the sun strong here but I am photosensitive due to my autoimmune condition and the treatments I have done for it. Just enjoying the sun with my dog I came in to realize my entire back was fried. I immediately took some sweet almond oil with a few drops of lavender and rubbed that mixture into my skin. Since I acted so quickly with the lavender I never even felt the burn. I did this the day of and the next day to heal my sunburn. Here were my results
Before
After
The day of- my back and shoulders were pretty much bright red. Even the following day my back was still pretty red, so I continued to apply my mixture of sweet almond oil and lavender essential oil. I also had a bath and dropped in lavender so my body could soak. By day three there is very little evidence that I even had a sunburn at all! No peeling, no burning, no redness. The almond oil acts as a carrier oil and also is an amazing moisturizer for the skin. Any other carrier oil would work but sweet almond is my favorite. The lavender essential oil soothes the skin and calms down any redness or burning sensations.
Try it out next time you soak up too much sun!
